In 1881 Bunnahabhain Distillery (meaning "Mouth of the river" in Gaelic) was established on the Isle of Islay and merged with W. Grant & Co (Glenrothes) in 1887 to create Highland Distilleries Co Ltd. The Bunnahabhain distillery was expanded in 1963 and a second pair of stills were added. Bunnahabhain is a major contributor to Famous Grouse and Black Bottle blended Scotch Whisky.
