Bowmore distillery was founded by John Simpson on the shores of Lochindaal in 1779 and was one of the first legal distilleries on Islay. The distillery operates traditional floor maltings and one of the distillery's warehouses was converted into the village swimming pool and is heated with waste heat from the distillery. Water is supplied to the Bowmore Distillery by the River Laggan.
